At Christmas, presentation is important. There are people willing to take as much care over wrapping gifts as they take over selecting gifts. One of our neighbors is considerate like this and takes a lot of care over both. In fact, she is the first person to bring us wine at Christmas, knowing that I work for the Wine Rack Store. A Merry Christmas Eve
Last night my family had a wonderful meal at our friends’ house. Maureen is an awesome cook (we had lasagna and homemade garlic bread, spread with garlic she grew). She also always chooses good wine: no cheap alcohol at her house. I’m not sure if there is a wine rack or just a shelf in her cool room, but wherever they are, each bottle keeps good company. Continue reading
Casa Larga, New York
Casa Larga Vineyard near Rochester in the Finger Lakes part of New York invites you to come out and taste some of their many varietals before the 23rd, when their extended tasting hours end. This allows just enough time to buy bottles for Christmas. Tasting is not free; however, at regular intervals, staff will pour out five pre-selected wines at a cost of $4 per person, offering tasting tips at the same time. Hours until the 23rd are 10-8pm. Continue reading
The Prospect of Merlot
Chocolate got me again. I’m such a pushover. While browsing the wine offerings at one of our local private wine shops I just could not decide, until my eyes lit on the little silver bag with a wafer-thin chocolate inside, hanging from the neck of a bottle. So - Prospect Winery Merlot won out over the other hundreds of bottles ranged on the shop wine racks. Continue reading
Liqueur Coffee Glasses
A tall mug of liqueur coffee tastes warm and satisfying after an afternoon of skiing, sledding or snow boarding. Like bottles of your best white, however, presentation is almost as important to that drinking experience as the beverage inside. Hence, just as you would place bottles of Riesling on a wine rack and not in a cardboard box turned on its side, you would probably like to serve tall hot cups of Irish Coffee (or similar concoction) in appropriate glasses, not just any old chipped mugs. Continue reading
Eola Hills in the Spirit
Eola Hills Winery in Oregon wants to get you in the spirit of Christmas. They are offering their award winning wines featuring special labels for the holiday season. Consider them gifts for your wine rack, already festively decorated. Continue reading
Stocking Stuffers
If the one you love enjoys a glass or two of Cabernet Sauvignon with dinner or is a closet Sommelier, give her (or him) stocking stuffers that show you understand this enjoyment of the noble grape. The Wine Rack Store carries a fair few items, but waste no time. Did you know there is less than a week to go? Continue reading
Stocking Treats
Last year I made a boo-boo. I decided to put a can of beer in my husband’s stocking. Two things happened. One: I got him a beer he did not like. Never mind though because two: I dropped it before it went into his stocking and it leaked out so that the remains were scarcely enough to make an elf tipsy, even a really small one. Continue reading
Drinks that Warm You to the Bone
Coffee and tea will warm a person, for sure. Hot apple cider: this, too, will work. But when you want to be really warm, right to your very marrow, there is nothing like coffee with a touch of something stronger. When you set out to entertain friends this holiday, keep a few bottles of the following next to reds and whites on the wine rack, just in case. Continue reading
Wine Clubs Part Two
One interesting thing about wine clubs I’ve found is that some of them offer many different sorts of subscriptions, each appealing to a particular taste. Some people are devotees of Californian wines; others love organic. Some like the look of a United Nations spread on their wine racks, with bottles from all across Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America. Continue reading
