Cooking with Wine

The experts say that cooking with wine adds dimension to your dishes.  One of the most popular ways to do so is by braising meat with a full bodied red.  It helps to bring out the flavors in the meat and also has tenderizing properties for the meat because of its acidity.  You can also use the same wine to deglaze the pan and make a wonderful sauce.

Other ways to include a sampling from your wine rack in your dishes might be to add it into a stock for flavor or use it to make fondue.  Fondue is one of my favorites.  There is nothing better than dipping yummy things in cheese!  I am pretty sure that cheese should be its own food group.  Speaking of fondue, there is an amazing restaurant not far from us up in Tacoma.  It is called the Melting Pot.  Not only do they serve everything fondue style, they also have an amazing assortment of wines in the cellar!

Diabetes Treated with Wine?

Who ever knew that you’d have a logical excuse to fill your wine rack to the brim!  No folks, “I really want it!”, isn’t a logical excuse although it is the one I often use.

Researchers have just completed a study that suggests Type 2 diabetes can be treated with wine.  The components found in the glass of red wine will work out like a daily medication for the people with Type 2 Diabetes. It was found that there are some antioxidants present in the red wine which is as efficient as the drug used for the Type 2 Diabetes.

The compounds in the wine which are active, called polyphenols, also act in a similar method to the drug rosiglitazone which is prohibited now. These researches were conducted before the ban occurred.

According to some of the experts in University of Vienna, drinking 125 ml glass per day was more than enough to deliver people in a similar manner to a dosage of medication. One of the recommended dosages for the Type 2 Diabetes is usage of drug, rosiglitazone for about 4-8mg.

Wine on a Budget

Just because you are on a budget doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a nice glass of wine.   With the recessions in our midst, many wineries are producing wine for the budget savvy consumer.  Below are some other money conscious tips to getting great wine on a tight budget for your wine rack from the financial blog Get Rich Slowly:

- Buy wine by the case.  Often you get a bulk discount!

- Stock up on wine during the Christmas season (November through January).  Retailers have massive sales on wines during this time.

- Wait for a sale.  Yes, your favorite bottle may be $25 but, trust us, it goes on sale!

Four Loco Banned at the Wine Rack Store

Well, at the Wine Rack Store and every where else it seems along with all other alcoholic energy drinks.  It seems that that FDA has decided these drinks are too much of a safety hazard to be selling at all.  Grocery stores and gas stations have been instructed to remove them immediately from their shelves, effective November 15th.

The reasons behind the FDA pulling these products is the effect of the alcohol and caffeine together.  It seems that researchers have found the caffeine overrides the body’s normal responses to alcohol.  They say it masks the normal results of intoxication such as passing out and feeling dizzy.  Because drinkers aren’t finding the expected response of intoxication, they continue to drink well beyond the safe amount.  Some drinkers, at a Washington university, went so far beyond their limit that they had to be hospitalized and have their stomachs pumped to get rid of the deadly amount of alcohol in their systems.

It seems to me that with these drinks off the market, the wine world might see a bit of a boost.  More sales often means decreased pricing, so who knows, soon you might be able to fill your wine racks for a fraction of the cost!

Thanksgiving Wine Pairings

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, you might be wondering what wines will go good with your Turkey Day meal.  Well, I did a little research and it looks like white is the way to go.  Or maybe a red from your wine rack?

Turkey, as we all know, is a rather neutral meat that pairs easily with a variety of wines. From light whites to medium-bodied red wines, an argument can be made for each, not so much based on the turkey itself, but rather based on the meal each chef creates around the holiday bird. It’s actually challenging to pair a single wine with all the various dishes that grace the traditional holiday table. From cranberries to root vegetables, gravy to mashed potatoes, there are so many things going on, it can be tough to choose a single wine. The same neutrality that makes turkey work with a variety of wines also makes it work with a seemingly endless variety of stuffing and, when you think of it, that stuffing is frequently the highlight of the meal. So, make things easier on yourself this year. Match your wine to your stuffing, and enjoy your holiday!

Wine Rack Store Is Frozen Solid

With our highest temperatures ranging in the mid to upper 20s the last few days, you can imagine the ice that has made things difficult for many people.  I’ll give you an example from my own personal life:

This morning, I woke to my alarm clock blaring it’s usual ‘time to get up’ nonsense.  I stumbled to the door to let the dogs out, wishing I had remembered to toss on a coat.  Once they had finished their business, I made my way back inside and into the bathroom.  I was just thinking how great it would be to hop into my morning shower to defrost a bit when I turned on the water.  Much to my disappointment, no water came out.  It seems as though ‘no freeze’ pipes are quite the scam because ours are currently frozen solid.  With no water to be had, I ended up washing my hair and brushing my teeth with bottled water.  I sure hope that everything thaws back out a bit before tomorrow.  I would hate to have to cancel my very first Thanksgiving because I had no water to boil potatoes in.  If that ends up being the case, I think I will spend my Thanksgiving bundled up by the fire with a glass of wine pulled from my wine rack.

Baby It’s Cold Outside at the Wine Rack Store

These past few days have been close to unbearable here in Washington.  Record low temperatures and snow are making things absolutely miserable.  The first day of snow was very pretty but then when it stopped snowing and the temps got down to 7 degrees ad everything froze, it became quite a hassle.  I mean, come one, 7 degrees?  Is that even a real temperature?  All of our roads are solid sheets of ice, which definitely makes for an interesting commute.  You could almost make a game of seeing how many vehicles in the ditches you can count on your way to work.

The remedy for the cold weather here at the Wine Rack Store?  Well, you can bet that it’ll take something a little stronger than what I have on my wine rack to thaw out!  I am picturing the nice little snifter of brandy or peppermint schnapps that will be adorning my coffee when I finally make it home tonight!

Baby Birthdays at the Wine Rack Store

My how times flies!  It seems like just the other day I was bringing home a tiny little newborn.  Now my son is almost 1 and I can hardly believe it.  I am having so much fun planning his birthday party.  There were so many fun little themes to choose from that it took me a while to decide.  Finally I chose Wild Wild West.  I am going to cover cardboard boxes in brown paper and paint little western style buildings on them, top his cupcakes with little cowboys, and dress him up as a little sheriff.  It is going to be so cute!

Now, my only decisions are what to get him for his birthday.  Because a good bottle of wine for our wine racks isn’t very appropriate for a 1 year old, I think I’ll go with the standard toys and books.  He loves books so I know they’ll be a hit and who can go wrong with toys?

My First Thanksgiving

I am SO excited this year for Thanksgiving.  I have obviously had many Thanksgivings before, but this year will be the first time that I am having it at my own house and making all the food.  I love cooking so I just can’t wait.  Normally our Thanksgivings are spent running around to relatives’ homes and it doesn’t ever seem to be relaxing.  This year, we decided to have dinner at our own house so that everyone else can come to us.  With a 1 year old, it just isn’t an option to be running all over with icy roads and hungry tummies.

In preparation, I have done some major shopping and also invested a few hours on the internet or with my face buried in cooks books looking up yummy recipes.  I am also hoping that our guests will bring something to drink.  Something from their wine racks perhaps??
